Shout-It-Out December 10- December 16
(Editor’s Note: EMGR created” Shout-It-Out!” for anyone who has a need to go off-topic in the posted subject. It should still be a media topic...meaning about newspaper, radio or TV. A new “Shout-It-Out!” will be posted each week for you to comment or reply to a comment made in that week. All weeks will stay active if you feel you need to comment further on a previous week. All the usual rules still apply as to language, personal courtesy and appropriateness. Any off topic remarks from another thread, maybe moved to “Shout-It-Out!” for that week. )

It is nice to see Scott Bremner really enjoy himself at the Xmas party. Seriously,(edit)
Chrissakes Jack! If you're gonna edit out the good stuff then don't even post the frickin' thing! XMAS SONGS SUNG AT WSEE PARTY: (Edit)
(Editor's Note: This gets to be in the area of rumor and character assassination. It doesn’t belong on EMGR even if it were true.)
So let me get this straight - you keep the identity of Al DuMont a secret. Yet a list of Xmas Carols sung at a holiday party is character assassination?
Jack, here is what we all think. There is no Alan B DuMont. There never has been and there never will be an Al DuMont. You are just trying to stir up trouble.
It is very easy to pick on WSEE and WICU. You hardly ever, if at all, pick on WJET. We all know of your close ties with Lou Baxter and those on upper peach.
Maybe it is time for full disclosure. The people of Erie don't like it when the Times won't reveal the names behind the newspaper editorials. We don't like your crap and we are going to stop frequenting your blog.
If you are going to slam WSEE/WICU and the Lilly family maybe you should take a good look in the mirror? This is the season of peace on earth. But for Jack it is just another chance to scream from his soapbox with his imaginary friend - crazy al dumontie!
I can't believe it. Even when I try to protect WSEE employees I get slammed. The Xmas carols that were supposedly sung at a supposed Xmas party had significantly modified titles that were grossly unflattering to the staff. You would have liked nothing more than for me to have published it so you could slam me for going deep in the journalistic gutter.
I won’t fall for that one either. If I was so pro WJET-TV why would I let a week of silly “Frosty” comments continue or specific reader critiques of on-air people at WJET. No different than I allowed of WICU or WSEE just as you have observed.
I have personally never written an unfavorable comment about any specific person on the air at WSEE, WICU or WJET. In fact I have written my own critique of WICU news and WJET news.
As you said, this is the season of “Peace on Earth.” That is one reason why I edited the way I did. (and I hate to edit at all)
I have more information than I ever could find the time to print. I choose the topics carefully and review the information for accuracy. I have said many times, that if you prove me wrong, I will correct it. I have done that several times as well.
This includes a comment that was supposedly made by Carol Wilson. Carol had the professional decency to call me directly and tell me that she never wrote that comment and asked, in a courteous manner, if I would remove it.
All I needed was her personal word that it was not her. If you doubt this story, ask her yourself. I have the highest respect for those at all the stations who attempt to put out a good product. It is their supporting managers that may come into criticism from EMGR for not doing their job or providing the proper support. SJL and NEXSTAR both have been targets. SJL seems more because of the decisions their own management has made or should have been made that diminished their station's value.
As for Alan B. I won’t fall for that one either. Alan is just one source and you know it. But you are a fool if you think he is the only one. Be very careful who is looking over your shoulder.
PEACE ON PEACH
I didn't realize WICU was a CBS affiliate? When did this happen? Will this mean I can no longer watch "Heroes" on the NBC station?
Its really bad when you don't even know what affiliation one of your tv stations is!?
I cant even believe SJL thinks their WICU station in erie pa is a CBS affiliate! When was the last time papa Lilly was even in Erie? Think its time he realized what affiliation channel 12 is?????
Anyone notice Jen Mobilia did the weather on channel 12 last night? She did a fine job!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Lilly, Ms. Mobilia! (I think Kelly is now the second most beautiful weather person on air in Erie!)
Yes. I am the one who found and provided Dennis that information. I will have more to say about it later.
I think Brian should call his dad and tell him to have the 7th grader who did the website check his facts or Sandy should proof read. (better than I do)
At least it was an attempt at a website which SJL has been criticized for not having not only by EMGR but also in Oregon and Hawaii.
More later on interesting observations however, I am sure most of you can pick them out yourselves based on what has been previously published on EMGR
I see all SJL stations are west of the mississippi. does this mean wicu and wsee could be for sale?
Nice to see WICU is part of the eye network! does this mean the long rumored scott bremner to wicu move could happen soon?
Last anonymous...
Again two good catches. WICU and
WSEE are the only stations now East of the mighty river. Also note that they list WICU and WSEE first. There smallest market. If you read the philosophy it is strangely similar to what New Vision says in there's.
Also I am not sure if it really is a website or a "For Sale" sign.
I think it is a for sale sign myself. Think about it, the smallest market stations they own listed first? The fact that they haven't poured hundreds of thousands into WSEE Digital? Mass Layoffs! Robotic Cameras!
I think it was just the Lilly family promoting WICU and WSEE for a quick, easy, and painful to the employees sale!
If Jen Boresz was in Erie Friday night for the annual WSEE christmas party then why was she also LIVE on the 11pm news in Toledo from the Maumee River?
Does WSEE now have the Star Trek transporter technology also?
Explain to me how someone can be in the same place (hundreds of miles apart) at the same time?
"CBS 12: THE ONE-TWO WATCH!"
Damn...you readers ask good questions and seem to have good info.
I was amazed by the article in the paper this week about new Action News 24 sports guy Bill Toth.
That guy actually left a public school teaching job in Maryland to come to Action News 24! Amazing! Most people do it the other way around (Abby Cahill, Wludyga).
I'm sure Bill probably took a nice salary cut and an obvious loss in job security by leaving a public school job to go work at crappy WJET, a station where most people are leaving like crazy.
And with a wife and family to support, this seems like a pretty risky thing for Bill to do.
I hope it works out for him, but Erie stations pay terribly low wages and aren't nice places to work.
Goog luck Bill Toth!!!!!
WJET is looking better since picking up Kim Thomas.
Her and Erika Howland are really good reporters. I doubt if either of them will be here much longer. They could make it in much larger markets.
It's obvious that some folks object to Jack's blog because of the comments people in the blog make about the different stations.
However, even without Jack's blog, these are the comments PEOPLE ARE ALREADY MAKING AMONG THEMSELVES IN ERIE!!
So instead of being critical of the blog (and Jack), maybe the blog readers from the local stations should pay attention to the comments and maybe learn from them.
There still are people left (Bill Toth) who want to pursue their first love no matter what the risks.
Give Bill a little time and he should develop into a pretty good local sportscaster. He was a contributor at one point for Fox sports pittsburgh.
I'm only curious about one thing? Why didn't JET try and hire Chris "Red" Hughes for the sports vacancy? Chris has unsurpassed knowledge and passion about ALL sports - local and national.
Everytime there is an opening he never gets hired. Doesn't he want to be back in front of the camera? were the off-air incidents why no one wants he in front of a camera? everyone deserves a second chance! (even scott bremner)
Kim is doing a fantastic job. Erika can easily punch her ticket in a top 20 market. Another underrated reporter at JET is Sarah Arborgast. JET has numerous reporters that can leave and go to a much higher dma market.
Give Lou Baxter credit. Since becoming news director he has made some good hiring decisions.
Stick to the mantra: If JET ain't broke don't fix it!
And most importantly: Don't screw with the brand!
Hear Hear!!!!!!!! Excellent post (2nd to last anonymous) about people in Erie echoing Jack's comments.
Jack isn't slamming any local station. This is just what us civilians have to say about the crappy state of local tv in Erie.
"WE'RE MAD AS HELL!!! AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!!"
A few of the local stations this week, while covering the Fire Department story, talked to local Erie firefighter Darren Hart.
Hart, is a former employee of WJET television. He left the station to become a firefighter.
Maybe WJET should have asked Hart why he left broadcasting. Could it be because of the crappy pay, benefits, and low job security offered by WJET and the other local stations???
It was once possible for many people to make a good living and have a nice career at the local stations when they were owned by local ownership. Not anymore.
What is Chris Hughes doing at the moment? I know he has some two hour show on local sports radio, but what does he do the rest of the day? Does he have another job somewhere? I agree that Chris is an underutilized sports guy in the Erie market. He's better than any person WJET has now, and he could also be a good second sports guy at WICU.
The details of the incident with him last year (where he appeared at that convenience store all beat up and then got arrested), were never fully explained. So unless the stations know more about what really happened, it's not fair to penalize Chris for the incident by not hiring him.
I don't think Darren leaving JET to become an Erie firefighter was such a good career move.
The piss-poor state of Erie finances and eventually Erie will probably be an all volunteer fire department.
Lets see, JET is supposed to have crappy pay, benefits and low job security? I don't ever recall anyone being FIRED from WJET? People have left WJET VOLUNTARILY! That's a big difference in my book!
think the local stations worry that he might have a (edit)and other issues. I do agree that it is not a reason to keep him off air. If everyone who had a (edit) or other problems were kept off air Erie wouldn't have any TV stations, Radio stations or a Newspaper. People who live in glass houses shouldn't cast stones.
I can't speak about Hart's motives. However he is not the only one that has done a similar thing.
A very long time ago, one WJET radio reporter (When WJET radio had a real news department) Jack Anderson left radio and joined the Erie Police Department. He was motivated after a series of ride along stories with them. It was real motivation.
Most of you now remember Jack as the perennial mayor candidate of the Republican Party. But his start was with WJET radio.
Darren Hart from what I know never had any intentions of making TV a career. It was a fun pit stop while he tread water waiting for a fire department job. Hell, until you can be a fireman, you might as well chase them!
Some people in Erie with unsurpassed sports knowledge and passion have too many skeletons in their closet. Late night antics have turned some into a liability, not an asset, to serious news organizations. If you're going to be in a high profile position, what you do on your own time does matter. Erie radio is probably the best fit for someone like that.
Oh my God...I was watching TV tonight and thought I was viewing a wine commercial. Turns out, it was 12's weather forecast!!! The winery woman is doing weather? Did Shannon have the night off?
To Anonymous above...B-D-S, is that you talking??
There seems to be constant complaints here about the low pay etc in local news, especially Erie news. Get used to it. Its the wave of the future. News aint what it used to be nor is broadcast tv. Corp. owners want large returns on their investments. If you are looking for large pay checks, DONT GO INTO NEWS. As for the positive comments about WJETs reporters, JET gets the best of the crop around here...and just FYI, Erika Howland LEFT Erie and came back! She worked in Cleveland for a while where she got some great experience and then brought that experience back to WJET. Our gain, clevelands loss! Its a shame that jet can find these great reporters but the corporate owners wont step up and pay enough to keep them here!
Everyone who enters news KNOWS that the paychecks aren't big. the problem is being physically able to support yourself. You spend $80,000 on an education only to get paid $7 an hour. You do the math for rent, student loans and food (I'm not joking on the numbers)... the starting salaries are actually getting lower!
Perhaps I missed it earlier on the blog, but what the hell is that Christian station doing where my FM96 is supposed to be? Anything we can do about it?
Above anonymous...
You beat me to a post I was planning a post about a pirate station in Erie. Although I don't know how that station could interfere with a station at 96.
I will have more on that soon. Anyone else wants to add, feel free to do so.
Jack,
Do you still honestly believe that VJ thing?
Honestly, about the only thing you've gotten right about WSEE since this thing started is that the address is 1220 Peach.
To say you're out to lunch is missing by a few meals.
Boy you really don't know how to read read. First you don't post in the correct thread. (Everybody seems to have gotten the message except you)
And you don't read the posts about what I said about VJ. Is it June 2007 already?
It seems that everyone wants to know who Alan is but nobody from SJL will admit who they are on this blog and that they are conducting a coordinated attack on this blog as they have done and found similarly guilty of in Oregon and Hawaii.
The closed door meetings management has had at WICU and WSEE have been very calculating in their threats.
They are trying to change the subject of their digital deceit in Erie and contributing to making Erie the laughing stock of broadcasting.
Where are the Myron Jones' and Ed Lamb's of today who really had "New Vision."
This was posted on a Hawaii TV Blog shortly after the Ignite system was installed at KHON (SJL)This might sound familiar to some of you.
"Just saw the 10pm news tonight as KHON rolled out their new Ignite system to control the newscast. To quote Joe Moore, "our ratings our gonna go up now!" and "we're working the kinks out....and we're gonna need a steamroller to work the kinks out!". During a rather shaky sportscast, Kanoa Leahey jokingly said, "all you can do is laugh" and happily sang while he waite for the next thing to come up while the video from the previous story remained frozen on the air. Their ending story was about a high-tech car, to which Joe quipped, "Be sure it's not called Ignite!"
And if you read any industry reports about that KHON incident, the anchor was widely criticised for his unprofessional, immature behavior. There were never any problems with newscasts before digital technology, right? Tapes never jammed in machines, film chains never went down, heads never clogged, right? I am remembering the good old days correctly, right?
Honestly Jack, Why should anyone disclose who they are if Alan doesn't? All I have to say is that this is a bunch of B.S... If you know what I mean.
Yes and camera's were balanced in the old days and replaced when they started to look too old.
Technology is great. Just don't experient with it on the air until you get it right. The Ignite system has been problematic everywhere.
You just don't turn it on and expect it to work perfectly for the viewers. It has resulted in savings for the company but less of an experience for the viewer.
It is the viewer that counts.
Frankly, if Alan discloced who he really is, quit a few people would be terminated from the friendly arms of SJL.
Makes you feel good all over doesn't it?
Ah yes, the good old days of television. Let's see: clogged tape head? no problem, just dump out of the story back to an experienced anchor who knows how to ad lib.
Film chain breaks? again, toss back to an experienced anchor who knows the beauty of the ad lib - Ned McGrath was an expert at this.
The great thing about the "good old days" was that if something went wrong you always had options. Today, if the computer crashes or freezes you are pretty much screwed!
Jack has it right on the money! If I disclose my identity a lot of people will lose their jobs - I don't want that on my conscience.
Again, thanks for caring so much about me. Kinda gives me the creepy crawlies - LOL! I guess I have to say this again since you weren't paying attention the first 3 times: I WILL REVEAL MY IDENTITY WHEN ALL ERIE TV BROADCASTS IN FULL DIGITAL!
All I Want For Christmas Is Digital In Erie!
"A Very Popular" Alan B. DuMont
(By the way Mr. Anonymous: do you like your Time Warner Internet?)
So, when you reveal yourself, after all digital is in place, people won't lose their jobs? How does this make sense, even in your world? I think the only person to lose their job would be the "leak", however, the information has had very little accuracy.
I am still waiting to find out what has been inaccurate. Alan makes his own decisions and I respect it.
But there are many deep throats in Erie broadcasting. That's what makes it interesting. Has been and always will be.
That is fine. I am just trying to understand the connection between saying who you are now and people losing their jobs. While people will be able to keep their jobs with this same disclosure whith the only difference is that there is digital in Erie. How does this compute? I just would like some elobaration. No disclosure needed, just an explanation of how that works. Thanks.
I can understand your question and I also know the answer that Alan would probably give.
If Allan wants to answer that, I will let him do the honors. But if I had to guess as to part of it, it might mean that hell would freeze over or a station would have to be be sold before certain that station would go digital.
It is an interesting timeline...I will have to admit.
Good answer Jack. Thanks for being quick too. As for alan, is alan just a play on words, or a play on words. "Allen Balcom DuMont" is the actual spelling of the man. I hope it is a play. A misspelling would do a great man an injustice.
Jack is right on the money with his expert guess.
This is the truth. I would love to reveal my identity when all Erie is full Digital. It isn't going to happen with the current WSEE ownership in place!
The current owners and management of WSEE have no Digital plan at all. No equipment is on order, no manpower for installation has been booked and there is NO activity at the WICU transmitter site on Donation Road in Greene Township.
If you look at the repeated FCC filings it is easy to ascertain WSEE is in a precarious financial condition. Losses of $400,000 last year and so far this year losses of almost $700,000. Again, easily verifiable information thanks to our good friends at the FCC.
I don't have to worry about revealing my identity anytime soon. The Lilly family doesn't have any interest whatsoever about bringing Digital Television to WSEE-TV. The only interest the Lilly family has is dressing up WSEE-TV for a quick sale. This is a positive development since a new owner would have no choice but to develop a Digital Channel.
Join me in saying (a premature) adios to the Lilly family. I am looking forward to the dawn of a New Vision in Erie Television.
This is my favorite quote:
"I'm Just A Harmless Lovable Little Fuzzball!" - Rush Limbaugh
Thanks for all your love and support - LOL!
A.B. DuMont
Wow, as if not even being able to spell your nom de plume correctly wasn't enough proof of your knowledge, your favorite quote is from a drug-addled admitted "water-carrier" who gets busted at the border for having illegal prescriptions while he is returning from a "vacation" in the Dominican Republic? Wow, Alan (Allen, Alen, however it's being spelled this week), I bow down at the fount of your superior intellect. You are right about everything you say. How could it not be so?
Re: Erie pirate-FM 96.
I no longer live in Erie but am curious as to the comment about religious broadcasts on 95.9. Is that the new LPFM testing?
I have also noticed from time to time when I am in town visiting, a pirate on 95.1 playing smooth jazz from a Live 365 feed. I have heard this same station on 107.3 as well.
Mr. Anonymous (or Mr. Brian Lilly, whichever you prefer?)
I actually liked your comments! It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy all over to know that I can REALLY get under your skin.
A.B. DuMont
P.S. Rush wasn't charged with anything. He was merely "detained" for 4 hours for bringing Viagra back into the country. That's hardly "hard" drugs! LOL!
Keep it up, baby!
Alan, I thought Viagra was a "hard" drug!
Hmmm...This has quickly turned into the "A.B. Dumont vs. WSEE" ping-pong match. (not sure who holds the title yet) I would much rather hear about something concrete, like the access to the public file. Any public file. WJET, WICU, WSEE, which station has allowed anyone to access their public file?
ZOINKS
Any bets that the Dumont vs. Anonymous battle is the same guy?
Even in cyberspace, arguing with yourself out loud is grounds to be committed.

Referring back to discussion here a couple of weeks ago about certification of TV weathermen, etc....take a look at
http://www.tvspy.com
in the "TVSpy Watercooler" section for the comment thread entitled
"AMS Seals gone from WDIV and WXYZ"
I still plan a post on this subject in the near future. Thanks.
