Shout-It-Out December 26 January 1

(Editor’s Note: EMGR created” Shout-It-Out!” for anyone who has a need to go off-topic in the posted subject. It should still be a media topic...meaning about newspaper, radio or TV. A new “Shout-It-Out!” will be posted each week for you to comment or reply to a comment made in that week. All weeks will stay active if you feel you need to comment further on a previous week. All the usual rules still apply as to language, personal courtesy and appropriateness. Any off topic remarks from another thread, maybe moved to “Shout-It-Out!” for that week. )

Nominate your media pinups for 2007. See Last Wednesday's 12/20/06 post.

Street closed....police tape all around....dead man in a vehicle. Sounds like a story to me and JET had some great video of the scene. The poor guy killed himself in a way that became very public....seems like news. JET was sensitive and didn't report the victims name...that was nice.

I just happened to notice that WICU is putting their HD channel number in big bold print on their station ID slide. I don't know how long they've been doing this, but I just noticed it yesterday. Up till now they, like everyone else, have always had it in very small print in the corner of the slide. Interesting

But,if the person's name is in the public record, and you don't report it, you're only doing half your job. (Obviously after next-of-kin have been notified.) Either cover it fully, or don't cover it, but don't only cover it partially. If it's news, then give the viewer the who, what, where, when, and why. If you choose not to cover it, that is fine also. We shouldn't be picking and choosing which facts to present to the viewer in order to spare someone's feelings.

What was the deal with the camera work and video production for WICU's Amanda Post Christmas special??? It was AWFUL! It honestly looked like some
poorly-done amateur high school or college video broadcast. I was surprised at how bad it actually was. At least the music was pretty good.

I would have to say that this years telecast of the Midnight Mass at Saint Peter's Cathederal was the worst in it 8 year history.

Camera work was poor and you could tell there was no extra lighting to bring out the colors of the season. All the pictures looked flat and dull.

It also badly needed Monsg. Tom Mc. to do color. This was not WJET's best production.

WJET does a very good job with the annual midnight mass, but with ONE exception. Why can't Mike Gallagher anchor the mass program without using it as a podium for launching more of his own shameless, self-promotion? In Last year's show, Gallagher couldn't help but talk about his own career, things he's done in broadcasting, his life, etc.

He did the same thing Sunday night!! Once again, while anchoring the mass program (which is SUPPOSED to be about the mass), Gallagher told viewers the tale of how he was in Pittsburgh earlier in the day covering the Steelers game.

He then went on to talk about how he experienced big back spasms, and had to be treated at St. Vincent before the night's mass. In other words, he made himself look like some kind of hero or warrior for showing up to do the broadcast. COME ON!!! (thumbs down)

And then (among other things,) he tells us how his daughter just graduated from college, and just landed a teaching job at the Cathedral Center, etc.

I'm sorry, but when I tune in to see the Catholic midnight mass, I WANT TO SEE AND HEAR ABOUT THE MIDNIGHT MASS!!! I really don't want to see "The Mike Gallagher Show" instead.

WJET obviously gives Mike plenty of leverage in terms of how Mike runs the program. But its still in very poor taste that Gallagher uses the show for his own
self-promotion and ego. That isn't the purpose of the mass program at all.

Jack, you really thought the camera work on the WJET mass program was poor? I actually thought it was pretty decent. But then again, maybe that's because I had just watched the really horrible WICU camera work on the Amanda Post Christmas special only a few hours earlier. So maybe WJET's camera work seemed better to me since I had just watched WICU's poor job.

Mike Gallagher speaking about himself? Wow, that's never happened before...

Has anyone seen the new promos on WSEE? They were modern and gave the station a fresh look.

The holiday promo was funny and cute! The others are good to. I wonder if someone new did them or if they decided to update their look and feel (which has been much needed).

Way to go!

I was especially interested in seeing Amanda's show as I could not attend the actual performance at the Warner...plus I know Amanda and some others involved in the show and I agree, the camera work left a lot to be desired. Someone would be doing a solo and the director would be late in getting a shot...if he even got a shot at all. I wonder if they attended any rehearsals or had some sort of cue sheet so they knew what was coming up. It was almost like the production crew was seeing the show for the first time.

Amanda and the folks on that stage deserved better.

However, the show was great!

When is WSEE going digital? I'm still not seeing Ch. 16...

Lewis...

As they used to say in the gold days of television "That's the $64,000 question."

According to the last FCC filing... they may (and only may) find in the money in February. But we learned not to hold our breath with SJL.

The WSEE promos were done by the crack promotions team of Sean Morphy and Jeremy Rex. They have definitely breathed a breath of fresh air into the ultra-stale '80s look of promos in town.

I know both of them, but I didn't realize they were in those positions now. Good for them!

Whose production truck was used for the Midnight Mass program ?

Rumours going around about an April 2007 release of a WKRP DVD set. It won't be full seasons but rather select episodes and apparently they will include SOME of the original music (where they could get clearances) and other music will be in keeping with the era (whatever that means.)

Anyone in radio has some favorite KRP episodes. The Turkey Drop episode was classic as was the one where we see a future KRP where everyone but Herb was fired and the station is automated all day. Talk about an eerie premonition!!

I also remember one scene where we are in the control room and we hear the beginning of a commercial for a nursing home that begins with the line "Have you ever wondered what would happen when you could no longer feed yourself?" For YEARS I've wanted to use that line in a spec spot.

Anonymous said...

How about that line in the current radio spot for Russell's (I think): "That boyfriend, by the way, is now your son-in-law." I laugh everytime I hear that - as if you wouldn't realize that fact!

So, now that we're at Dec 27, any format adjustment at Froggy? Didn't notice one in a brief listen yesterday as has been seen across the country for several years.

Erie DJ guy wonders about any format adjustment at Froggy.....I'm on vacation so don't read that as a complete shift in the morning...and the only format adjustment from 24/7 christmas is we're back to all oldies 24/7.
Happy New Year to all,
The Captain

Let's see...midnight on Christmas eve...I don't think the #1 senior most experienced people are working at any TV station in Erie...especially to shoot a catholic mass. It was probably rookies that shot the mass. Perhaps the same bunch that shot and edited Amanda's xmas gig. Most normal people were busy wrapping presents listening to Froggy 94.7.

New Year's prediction: by this time next year, all three TV stations will offer full newscasts on their websites/video podcasts/mobile sites. Further, by the time the drop-dead DTV deadline comes around in 2009, at least one-third of the TV audience will be getting their programming via "on-demand" services either through cable or internet (GooTube/I-Tunes). The programming schedules will exist for live events (sports) and for the late adopters. Much like Tuesday is the day for new music and movies at retail, I could see Sunday or Thursday being the day when all of the newest episodes of Lost and CSI get released for download.

Hey Jo Jo,

Are you serious about those predictions? Or is your tongue planted firmly in cheek?

What ever happened to the rumors of the possible sale of WICU/WSEE a month or so back?

Jack Tirak said...

From my understanding, the stations are still in play. Several prospective buyers have visited one or the other property since June.

They also have visited EMGR.

What may make it more difficult SJL is that each station may have to be sold to a separate buyer. With the change in the congress and the bad taste for duopolies among mostly Democrats, buyers are treading more careful.

As others have reported here, SJL last two properties East of the mighty Miss. river, is Erie.

Everything else is way on the West coast and in the islands.

2007 should be interesting. Keep reading EMGR.

That is very interesting. For the last month, his name was the number one googled on EMGR and that was from all over the country. Very interesting.
