WICU News: It’s Back To The Future! (A Review)

Not long ago, EMGR wrote about WJET Action News and its philosophy of the first 7 minutes focused on stories as a way they attempt to command and attract an audience. That philosophy was and is the hallmark of WJET since its beginnings in Radio but it was taken to a more refined approach by Eric Johnson and its current master, Lou Baxter.

WICU has similarly looked back into its own history to find a formula they feel works for them. As many of the comments on EMGR have noted, WICU had some of the greatest anchors and newscasters in Erie broadcast history. But WJET-TV’s 1980’s challenge and WICU’s panic reaction set it into the never- never land of fumbled opportunities. That is until the addition of news director Phil Hayes who is reshaping it back to its former roots.

In the opinion of this reviewer, WICU’s view of the news is very different from WJET’s. WICU’s coverage and order of the news seems to stem from a conscious decision as to what may affect the average viewer the most. Sometimes these are complex issues of local government which are not exactly as exciting as a crash or a fire. So the channel 12 news digest may not be as emotionally active as its competitors, but usually more detailed in its reporting.

The news team has been selected, for the most part, to appeal to the more involved viewer of the news. The staff is mature and seems to go out of their way to dig behind the standard news of the day..

Kevin MacDowell and Amanda post are co-anchors, but it is obvious that MacDowell is clearly the lead anchor. In the follow-up to a reporter’s story, he takes the roll of the viewer in asking the tougher and sometimes more revealing questions. Other competitors do this to some extent, but not to the intensity that MacDowell gives it.

In story count, WICU does not cover as many as WJET Action News, but those they do are covered with usually greater detail.

I already wrote about “Behind the Kitchen Door” so I won’t repeat myself except to say that Hayes does seem to seek news vehicles like it that attempt to separate and distinguish itself from the competition. That is what you have to do if you are to be successful. The ratings seem to support his judgment.

Much has been said on EMGR about MacDowell’s body language as being provocative and overdone. I still challenge that view. MacDowell is a seasoned anchor and knows that an anchor has to convey a sense of command. In my opinion, he uses his body language to help with that authority. Some may view that as arrogance.

The supporting cast at WICU News is mostly veterans. The Lisa Adams and the Paul Wagner’s are real old timers at the station and lend a sense of continuity with past glories. (I still wish Paul was used more effectively for his long time knowledge of the Erie political scene.) He and Lisa both bring a calmness and steadiness to the news they report. They don’t attempt to sensationalize or try to hog the camera.

Scott and Bo each bring a different view. They are a definite contrast of styles, looks and sound. The days of the NBC perfect voices are gone and have been replaced in today’s broadcasting with men and women who should be chosen for their news gathering knowledge rather than their looks and baritone voices. (There maybe some legitimate debate about the selection criteria of broadcast women.)

This is only a review of the main news areas and not the sports and weather. Those come later.

Overall, I hope that any possible move to VJ by WICU News enhances the experience for the viewer and not diminish the gains that Hayes and company have made.

Putting the well reported technical glitches aside, the local news scene has become competitive again.

"Congress passed a law on February 1, 2006, setting a final deadline for the DTV transition of February 17, 2009. Most television stations will continue broadcasting both analog and digital programming until February 17, 2009, when all analog broadcasting will stop.. " FCC

It seems like you're suggesting that voices do not count. I don't agree at all. Local television news WAS better when it was expected that a prospective reporter or anchor needed to have a pleasant-sounding speaking voice.

And it SHOULD be important today as well. Take Scott Cook for instance. Easily the
worst-sounding voice in local news history. Many times when I'm listening to Cook, I just want to change the channel. I'm sure some other viewers have had the same reaction.

Wasn't Edward Lamb (the eccentric former owner of WICU-TV) branded as some kind of communist sympathizer back in the 1950s? I believe he made a trip to the USSR, and didn't he also own the former Erie Post-Dispatch newspaper?

On thing WICU does have, are two of the most arrogant-appearing news personalities in Erie. I'm talking about Kevin McDowell, and Bo Koltnow.

In Koltnow's case, it's surprising that such a young person has become so arrogant, so soon.

Normally, you'd find the kind of arrogance Koltnow displays in a much older reporter.

What happened to Mike Conway? Wasn't he the news director at WICU a few years back?

I think Emily Matson deserves some props. I have been very impressed with her field and studio presence. And she is a home town product.

Jack...

I agree with you about one thing. It's very clear that WICU is programming it's news around JET. I flip back and forth. WICU can't do what JET does and beat 'em. So for years under various leader, I think they have been trying to do anything and everything else. Is it successful? Not so far in any lasting meaningful way. As for Kevin and Amanda...I don't agree with you. They are lightweights compared to Ned and Hyle on Hotline. No comparison. When 12 ruled...they ruled! It's never going to happen with these two anchors. Kevin is often just plain goofy...and Amanda is only commmanding when there's a band backing her up.
Again, I agree that sometimes 12 goes into more detail on this or that story than the other stations in town, but is that interesting and informative, or just boring TV?
There are more stories that I could care less about on 12's newscast that make me switch channels, than either of the other two stations. But then, I'm a gal that just loves the On Your Side Action Newswatch Clear and Concise, Coverage you can Count On local news shows.

I have to agree that Ned, Hyle and Forsyth were way above the cut.

Hyle Richmond didn't have a great voice any better than Scott but he knew his Erie politics.

Last year we had an event at my workplace and I sent press releases to all Erie media outlets. WICU not only showed up to cover our event, but aired it on their evening news. They were gracious enough to provide a CD at no charge of their footage to me when I asked.

It left me with a great impression of WICU. Maybe it was a slow news day, who knows, but the fact that our small business was on tv made me a star that week. Thanks, WICU!

I got the opportunity to have Lisa as a professor for a class at Gannon and I really enjoyed learning from her. I never once got the sense she had an ego. She wanted to share knowledge and did a great job.

I have also had the experience of good news coverage from WICU on an event a few months back. Mark Soliday was the reporter on scene and did a great story. WJET also featured an interview detailing the event that we were very pleased with. Both WICU and WJET left me with a good feeling about the event being fully covered.

So why do you think WICU runs a promotion about how funny Kevin is? What's that all about?

Anonymous said...

If one does not show that personality onair, then the promotions team has extra work to do to make that person seem more like a person than a news robot. There is nothing wrong with being a straight-man. He should show an ounce of personality though if his promotions team is going to make that effort. Otherwise it is a waste of airspace.

Let me finish by saying K is not bad, but it would be nice to see a softer side on occasion to show he is human.

Looks like Bo Koltnow has escaped WICU as he is now working at WFMZ which is the same station that Rachel Frank went to a few months back.

Thanks for that update. I wish Bo good luck. (That's another post that gets dated.)
