What The SJL Story was in Hawaii!

(Editor’s Note: A few of you emailed me asking what the KHON story was that I referred to several days ago. It is a relatively old story that made its way around the national trade papers. In January, 2006, SJL purchased the Fox affiliate in Hawaii KHON. KHON was the leading station in the islands and had the number one newscast in every time period... forever. This past June KHON dropped to number 2 at 10 P.M. They remain number 1 in all other news segments, but according to media watchers in the islands, eroding.

One of SJL’s first decisions was to order the current general manager to reduce the staff by about a third. He chose to resign rather than carry out that order. His decision prompted 37 year anchor Joe Moore, to deliver the following editorial which was reprinted in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin)

"This has been a difficult day for most of us here at KHON2. It was the final day on the job for our general manager, Rick Blangiardi, who refused to carry out the mass firings of over one-third of our station employees, as ordered by our new owners, who take over tomorrow.

The firings are not a matter of cutting excess fat to improve efficiency; they will be a butchering of an already lean work force that will remove muscle, bone and vital organs.

A small percentage of people will be replaced by automation. The rest will severely reduce our ability to serve the community in the manner in which you, and we, have become accustomed.

The new owners recently changed the name of their company from SJL to Montecito. It is a virtual company, with no office building, that specializes in buying and selling TV stations.

Their business plan for KHON2 calls for an immediate, drastic, across-the-board reduction of personnel in order to slash the payroll. ...

In short, it is not a plan used by a quality broadcast company to foster a long-term commitment to its employees or the viewers it is charged with serving.

It is the sincere hope of all of us who have worked long and hard to make this TV station what it is today, that the departure of Rick Blangiardi -- who stood up for us,while he was standing tall for quality television -- it is our hope that his departure will not be in vain, and that our new owners will reconsider their draconian plan, and pledge to the people of this state that operating KHON in the best interests of the people of Hawaii is not only their No. 1 goal, but also their No. 1 priority."

Let’s move 6 months later (June 28, 2006) after the staff reduction and the installation of the money saving automation. Better yet… let KHON anchor Joe Moore tell you in his own words just as he shared it with his viewers. (He must have a damn good contract or doesn't give a...)

Erie could have told Honolulu this would happen. Just as a side note, there is nothing wrong with automation as long as you have the right equipment and it works. However, I have seen a few cut off heads at WSEE from naked robotic cameras gone wild. If SJL wants to share their version of the story or comment, I will post it. (With a real name please)

"Congress passed a law on February 1, 2006, setting a final deadline for the DTV transition of February 17, 2009. Most television stations will continue broadcasting both analog and digital programming until February 17, 2009, when all analog broadcasting will stop.” FCC www.dtv.gov

I'm a WICU viewer who has given up on the station in recent months (moved to no local TV news at all). The newscasts are increasing error filled (not factual errors, but technical ones). At least now I understand some of the "crap" as Joe calls it that may be happening.

Somewhere Howard Beale (Peter Finch) is smiling!

I agree with Anonymous, WICU has had way too many mistakes as of late. Someone in an earlier post referred to John Wilkosz as being a good engineer - I don't think so. What the hell has happened to Channel 12?

ErieDJGuy,

Ned McGrath, Dave Forsythe and Hyle Richmond never would have tolerated this shit!

Who cares about what the hell happens in Hawaii? I saw the clip, SJL should have fired his ass on the spot!

There is nothing wrong with technology, nothing!

Erie is a tiny, tiny market. If a station owner(s) want to save a buck that's fine with me.

Sudsie (And that name was taken by a veteran newsman in Erie that I think his priest son would take exception too)

Unless the buck saved comes from your pocket.

I think we are at a critical point in the evolution of Erie broadcasting. Do the current group of station owners (SJL/Montecito, Lilly, Nexstar) have an actual business plan for the future? could they be winging it? do they not have a clue? I think the unfortunate answer is current ownership (SJL/Montecito/Lilly) is more interested in saving a dollar than investing in the future.

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with "a penny saved is a penny earned" however, at some point the business must be grown and nurtured in order to survive. To grow a business capital expenditures MUST be made even in a market the size of Erie.

If the Erie region is to grow or even thrive the time has come for the current owners to find a way to implement the latest technological advancements. This isn't a temper tantrum about Digital but merely an honest, constructive criticism of the current state of broadcasting in Erie.

It is sad to realize but Erie TV has come to a critical point in its history. Where do the current group of owners (SJL/Montecito, Lilly, Nexstar) see the market in the next 5 years? 10? I don't think I want to know the answer to that question as long as the current group is in charge.

There is nothing wrong with "a penny saved is a penny earned" unless you have no plans to grow the business. The prudent businessman knows the only way to grow a business is by "spending money to make money." If you were to plant a vegetable garden would you just ignore it? No! You would water it and nurture it to give it the best chance of survival.

If Erie is to grow and thrive as a region we must have the latest in TV technological innovations. "Capital Expenditure" is not a dirty word...except to the current group of owners.

I have one final comment to make in the form of a question..."How much more can you cut before you hurt the business model?"

(Can't wait to hear the responses!)

Jack, this is anonymous from the "Life of Brian" thread. Had that been any other anchor he would have been axed on the spot. I'm not trying to undermine your internet savvy but the anchor in question is a "GOD" on the islands. SJL had/has no other option other than to keep him in his current position.Elsewhile, their numbers would have gone further/farther(I never could get it correct)in the toilet. Granted the man has a colossal ego, he does have a point about SJL introducing new technology without fully testing it out.

One previous poster spoke about how WICU technical problems drove them from our broadcasts. Short of the the transmission problems, the weak link is a employee tasked with the the operation of the 3 robotic cameras and a 6 foot audio board. How many hands does the man require? Let's see? At any one moment that's 2,for 2 anchors on te audio board and the 2 required for the operation of the cameras. Now we're on to the wx tease. Now we're talking 3 mics and 2 cameras. Finally, let's go for the closing shot that requires all cameras (potentially) and all 4 mics. Anyhow, you figure it out.

I'm thinking I should take a name. Anyone have any suggestions?

Whose bright ideal was it for the audio board operator to run the robotic cameras as well? Ahh, SJL synergy!

(Maybe your name can be Mike's Mike?)

Most of the previous posts address the technical flaws associated with
WICU and the on-air product. I come from the content camp and am continuing amazed at the shortcomings that Erie viewers are routinely subjected to on a daily basis.
Last night, Rob "Urkle" Wilson was "live" from the Crawford County fair. First, his mic was way too hot. I don't think viewers should have to turn down their sets because talent decides to yell the forecast.
Second, He and Amanda did some lame psuedo-personality based "schtick" about fair food. It wasted air time and more importantly, it wasted my time as a viewer.
Please, someone learn how to utilize "live" elements within a newscast to inform and entertain.
WICU has so far done neither. I hope that someday, TV viewers become savy enough to realize that "live" for the sake of going "live" doesn't fool anyone and eventually, ratings and ad revenues will reflect the same.
A wise news director in a major market once put it best, albeit crass..."Exclusive crap is still...crap!"
We'll address the practice at all Erie affiliate newsrooms of slapping an "exclusive" banner on every frame of video during sweeps
in a future post.

So basically you're blaming the Audio operator at WICU for all the technical problems? When WICU's transmitter breaks down (which is quite a bit lately) it's the audio board operator's fault? Please!

The employees are in a revolt against SJL - that's why there are so many "problems!"

Anonymous said...

No taters, the audio operator is not responsible for all of WICU's problems. It was merely an attempt to demonstrate the lengths which SJL has gone to make money and rid itself of employees. You will find the same kind of multi-tasking, do more with less mentality throughout the entire station. It worked at first but then SJL kept cutting and not replacing employees. The operation will implode. It's not a matter of "if", just a matter of "when".

I thought the union at WICU was one of the strongest in the country? Back in the day Wally Nash and Dave Knappenberger would have never let SJL get away with what they are getting away with nowadays.

I guess it was more important for certain employees to save their own asses and become suck-ups for current management!?

Guess the stories are true about SJL buying off certain union leaders! (LET THE IMPLOSION BEGIN!)

Editors Note: I have received several comments in this thread that suggest some conflict among persons. While I will post general comments and critisisms I will not post specific critisisms of named employees who are not "on--the air" or are personal attacks. I understand the frustration that some might currently experience, but I would suggest not using Erie Media-Go-Round to attack each other. That only helps management unless that is your actual intent.

However, frustrations and decisions by management that affects work environment or the "on-air" product are fair game for comment.

How the hell did I get dragged into this thing? I haven't been involved with NABET-CWA in years, although I am still a dues paying member. Will Lou Grant please explain himself? I'm readily accessible at work or via e-mail. Thanks for the forum Jack.

Wally,

I apologize for dragging you into this. I was just trying to make a point that WICU had a onetime powerful union with EXCELLENT leaders.

I meant no disrespect to you or Dave. You are one of the hardest working, most-liked photographers in the market.

Please accept my apologies! I will leave you out of this.

This is what I am having a hard time understanding: If SJL isn't making any money owning WICU/WSEE then why don't they just sell the stations? Why continue making everyone's lives miserable and just get out? I am sure there are companies that would pay what SJL is asking for the stations.

Life is too short to be miserable. Life is too short to make employees feel unappreciated and overworked. The time has come for responsible ownership of Erie TV.

Can't We Just All Get Along??
