We are all familiar with Jack Tirak and his many years of media and advertising expertise in Erie, but exactly who is Alan DuMont?
I've read the bio and know that he likes Bond movies, hockey and firefighter memorabilia, but what makes him qualified as a media/broadcast "consultant"?
I didn't know that Frank Magid had a field office in Albion.

When Jack returns to EMGR I will let him address this comment.

Thanks for your comment!

"Anything James Bond" is the tipoff. Alan B. DuMont is readily identifiable based upon a recent article in the Erie Times-News.

If I am correct, his industry credentials are impeccable.

And that's no B.S. !!

Hey, that's just spiffy, but I don't have a copy of "Erie's only newspaper" readily in front of me so again, I will ask...Who is Alan DuMont and what makes him qualified to speak about Erie media? is it years of service? Is he a former broadcast owner? Did he once share a cab with Peter Jennings? What? Oh...one more thing.
That's no B.S.!!!

Again, when Jack returns he will answer any questions regarding my status. I can only say that Jack knows my qualifications and can assure you I know what I am talking about!

I thought Alan B. DuMont did a fine job while Jack was away. You people really do need to lighten up.

Incidentally, wasn't Alan B. DuMont one of the inventors of Television? (I'm surprised no one picked up on that play-on-words!)

Hmmm. No public statement of support for DuMont by Tirak. I think that speaks volumes about DuMont's lack of expertise!

Gotta learn to stick up for your people Jackie!

Jack Tirak said...

I would have answered sooner but I was "under the knife."

Alan has worked in several broadcast markets and he had my full support while I was away.

My goal was to keep the blog going in my absence. Alan did that. Alan is also a behind the scenes supporter and contributor in many ways.

Jack Tirak said...

Bingo!!!

The man knows his TV history. Does anyone knoew if DuMont had an affiliation in Erie?

Anonymous said...

Yes. The DuMont Television Network had an affiliation with WICU-TV when Channel 12 signed on in 1949.

By the way, I thought your colleague did a fine job. People have been really testy lately! (Guess Christmas is on the way?)

Anonymous said...

Yes, WICU was originally affiliatd with DuMont (as well as the other networks), and it also used equipment manufactured by DuMont in the studio & transmitter areas.

See

http://members.aol.com/cingram/television/dumont.htm

for lots more details about the genius (technically, not at business matters) DuMont.

WICU is included in the list of 1949 affiliates in Appendix 9, albeit getting the shows on kinescope films since the AT&T coaxial cable hookup for TV was not yet available in Erie.

Jack Tirak said...

Bravo...

You are all correct and yes WICU's first cameras were DuMont. And big mother's they were too.

So Jack,
Is the Alan M. DuMont on your blog the same Alan M. DuMont who launched the DuMont Television network or does he happen to share the same name? This was never
addressed.

Jack Tirak said...

He is the same guy in spirit.
