Shout-It-Out!! November 26-December 2, 2006

(Editor’s Note: EMGR created” Shout-It-Out!” for anyone who has a need to go off-topic in the posted subject. It should still be a media topic...meaning about newspaper, radio or TV. A new “Shout-It-Out!” will be posted each week for you to comment or reply to a comment made in that week. All weeks will stay active if you feel you need to comment further. All the usual rules still apply as to language, personal courtesy and appropriateness. Any off topic remarks from another thread, maybe moved to “Shout-It-Out!” for that week. Let me know if this is something you like.)

I saw Kevin MacDowell and Amanda Post standing side by side in some holiday promo...he must have been a full foot taller than her. Come on...I've seen Kevin in real life. He's a shrimp. Why did Amanda let him stand on a box...is it in his contract that he must appear taller than her? Larger than she is? I had a holiday howl over that one!! In the next promo, Rob Wilson will be a foot taller than everyone else.(LOL)!

I ran into Scott Cook out on the town and spoke with him for a bit. Very nice guy in person.

Who is this new guy that WSEE had on the other day during the noon newscast? My God, he was absolutely horrible!!!! His name was something like John Treanor, or "Trainer", or something like that.

He was going a live shot from some Black Friday location. OMG did the guy suck. I sure hope he gets better. He couldn't have gotten any worse. On top of how poor his delivery was, he sounded as if he didn't even care!

Jack Tirak said...

Unless I am mistaken, I think he is the new "one man band."

Is Kelly Curran still doing the weather on WSEE Channel 35 on the weekends? She used to wear these really tight pants all the time. She looked hot!! She looks to me similar to how a very young Kirstie Alley looked (many years ago).

Why does WICU have such awful looking studio cameras? They invested a boatload of money on studio robotics but it would seem they can't teach their enginerring staff how to properly white balance a studio camera!

I realize WICU is doing things on the cheap (big shock there) but why not take some pride in your job? Put up the Chip Chart on the easel about 20 minutes before the newscast begins and spend 5 to 10 minutes to get the best color possible.

It really is simple. 12 used to have Ikegami (TUBE) Studio Cameras. Then, around 1995, they switched to Ikegami ENG Cameras mounted on the same old tripods. If you are going to spend the big bucks on the best camera (Ikegami!) then spend the time to make the picture look the best!

I can't believe I even have to post this. Most engineers take pride in the product put on-air. I would be more than happy to show the WICU Engineering Staff the "Proper" way to balance and color shade their studio cameras!

I also volunteer my expertise to help them properly light their studio. I would also love to help them change the news set.

Back in the day Mike Csop would hop all over his staff if the Studio Cameras were even a little bit off-color. I even got my ass chewed by the Chief a couple times. Taught me one hell of a lesson. After that I always made sure the Cameras looked their best - and believe me those RCA's they had were pretty temperamental. Loved the Ikegami!

Please, Please, Please take pride in a proper studio camera picture!

Thank You

So...Froggy is now 24/7 Christmas Music!! Some thoughts:

1. This should be good news for Classy 100...because while I'm sure there are that devoted few that won't mind hearing variations of "White Christmas" and "Winter Wonderland," most will tire of it quickly at this point and I think Froggy's audience will migrate over to Classy. If Classy's smart, they'll up their 70's quotient a bit during this period.(Doesn't it only seems like there are about 30-40 Christmas tunes that anyone plays...just different arrangements of the same old same old?)

2. What will Froggy do between 7-Midnight? Or has Tom Kent gone all Christmas too? I sure hope not cuz he's the most entertaining thing on that station right now.

Anonymous said...

Yes Kelly is still on the weekends. And yes she is hot. The camera makes her look tall but she is actally a shortie. Cute but short.

How about a "where are they now" post on past TV news people from the Erie market?

Jack Tirak said...

That is a good idea. Seems like a lot of interest.

Anonymous said...

Superlatives:

Most attractive all-time Erie TV personality: It's a tie!
Kiran Chetry and Maria Sansone.

Most attractive current Erie TV personality: It's a tie!
Curran and Emily Matson.

Jack Tirak said...

In putting together a "Where are they Now" post of Erie newsies, I would need a lot of input from the readers. Who would you like to know about and can you help in locating any?

Anonymous said...

I'd rate the most attractive
all-time Erie TV personalities as Dylan Dreyer, Angie Dickson, and Annette Tyler.

My whole reason for watching WICU at one point was to see Dylan Dreyer.

Anonymous said...

Here is a start of names...

Mark Spain WICU
WTLV NBC-12 and WJXX ABC-25
Steve Drexler WJET
???
Evan Lovett WICU, WJET
WDBJ TV Roanoke, VA Executive Producer
Kate Hubben WICU
Executive Director Leadership Cleveland

Memo to Dave Richards & my friends at Froggy 94:
This may be the first year for a mainstream station to go all-Christmas before Christmas Eve, but it's been several years that 106.3 WCTL has gone all-Christmas for two weeks before the holiday or longer. Besides the only artists putting out good new Christmas albums these days are Christian and country artists. Anyway, with a 400 Christmas song rotation it should be a good move for 94.7.

Anonymous said...

Steve Drexler is a senior partner in a Pittsburgh based law firm.
Steve left broadcasting after WJET and pursued a law degree at Duquesne University.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the earlier comment. WICU has very poor quality studio cameras. Doesn't anyone at 12 realize this?

Jack Tirak said...

Above Anonymous..

Everyone does except the bean counter who has to pay for it.

Anonymous said...

Honestly, you can't say Maria Sansone is not the hottest Erie product! Goggle all those old babes you named and then goggle Sansone. Her head shots are amazing! And Dylan Dreyer has a mom's haircut now. Even Sansone's Wikipedia photo is an 11 out of 10.

Annette Tyler has to be before my time-never heard of her.

Jack Tirak said...

To show you how old I am, Maria Sansone's dad, Tom, used to intern where I worked in the 70's.

He is the real inspiration in her career.

Anonymous said...

I did a non-scientific study over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend involving Froggy "All Christmas All The Time" 94.7FM

Number of times playing Johhny Matthis' "Sleigh Ride"

Friday: 11
Saturday: 6
Sunday: 7
Monday (through 4:30pm): 5

Guess they have run out of other songs to play?

(If anyone at Froggy reads this I would like to request Dean Martin's "Let It Snow" Classic!)

Jack,

Some of your readers weren't born until the 80's.

Also, Teresa Murtland was "80's hot"

Jack Tirak said...

I know that. Make me feel older. My daughter was born in '78 and son in '84.

As far As I am concerned she still is but shejust left for Africa.

Anonymous said...

I didn't include Maria Sansone at the top of my list only because she wasn't an "official" Erie media personality the way an a regular anchor or reporter at one of the stations is.

Otherwise, she'd be at the top of my list too!

Anonymous said...

Jill McCormick was quite hot when she first came to Erie in the mid 1990s and was "Jill Gardner" at WICU. She's still quite pretty, but not as much as when she first arrived here.

Anonymous said...

What's wrong with WICU's studio cameras? Compared to the terrible camera they use in the newsroom their studio cameras are state of the art!

Anonymous said...

Saying that Maria Sansone was one of the hottest on Erie TV is kind of icky since she was, what, 12 or 13 when she was on JET? I'll grant you that now she is a stone-cold fox, but when she was on Erie TV she was a little girl.

Mike Gallagher? UGH! Please already! If you think it makes you sick the number of times he has let it be known he went to High School with Dan Marino - how about the number of times he told people he would have been a top sportscaster in NY or LA if it wasn't for "the accident!"

Mike Gallagher gets my vote for ALL-TIME MOST ANNOYING ERIE MEDIA PERSONALITY! NY and LA's Gain is our Loss! UGH!

Anonymous said...

Most annoying?? Mike Gallagher is easily at the top of the list. And he's certainly the most shamelessly self-promoting media personality. He makes me sick.

And accident or not accident, no way that clown was headed to NY or LA.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe the shameless way Gallagher mooches his way into sporting events undre the premise of "taking pictures!"

Have you ever seen his website? You can actually "buy" his photographs - the cad actually thinks he's a decent still photographer.

I agree, without any doubt whatsoever that Mikey G is the most annoying ever!

Jack Tirak said...

Well guys. I said her dad was her inspiration but apparently she does credit Mike G. with her discovery.

"1992 - My first TV job! On the news set at WJET-TV 24 in
Erie, PA with Mike Gallagher. I was 11 yrs. old when Mike "discovered" me. I really owe it all to him for getting my career started. "

She has to be the definitive answer so there is no speculation, at least on her part, who discovered her. I am going to remove some of the posts regarding Mike as opinion is trumped by fact.

Excuse me guys.

Anonymous said...

But you do have to admit Mike is a shameless self-promotionist. He should really be in Public Relations with that butt-kissing mentality of his.

Anonymous said...

That is not the first time your blogers have been wrong!

Jack Tirak said...

I resemble that butt kissing as I spent a great deal of time in public relations.

Jack Tirak said...

"That is not the first time your blogers have been wrong!"

True and it won't be the last. But it is their personal opinion. However, when the subject states directly and in print the opposite... it stands to be corrected.

Anonymous said...

I know, that is why I corrected EMGR!

Anonymous said...

At least you were a gentleman when you kissed butt! Mike only does it if the end result benefits his wallet!

New topic:

Hear anything about Lisa Adams not being happy with WICU not doing 11pm news on Sunday nights?

Just curious. I've heard rumblings that Lisa feels it is an ill-advised move. That can't be good? Having your longest tenured on-air employee not be happy?

Jack Tirak said...

Fair enough. But I stills stand behind my comment that her dad was her inspiration and the one that managed her early success. I spoke to Tom several times during that period and a prouder and more determined dad you would ever want to meet.

Jack Tirak said...

Regarding Lisa Adams...that had been mentioned about a month ago if not longer on EMGR. She does what she does.

I agree there should be a late night newscast following the game.

Anonymous said...

Where is WJET's Christmas party this year?

Anonymous said...

The point isn't that it was inaccurate that Gallagher helped Sansone get into broadcasting. He certainly did play a part, and even her site itself claims he "discovered" her.
The "point" is that Mike has shamelessly self-promoted himself for years by reminding the Erie viewers (and people in general) about this over and over and over. After a while, it becomes nauseating to listen to. On top of that, it isn't as if Sansone would never have had a chance without Gallagher. She's very talented on her own, and of course her father was a great influence too.

In my opinion, Mike takes WAY too much credit for Sansone's success. But then again, that's the guy's shameless, self-promoting nature at work.

Jack Tirak said...

In Mike's defense, if I saw someone who I helped give a start to succeed, I would take great pride that I had a hand in that development. And I might even crow about it. It is very natural. On the other issues of sports and such. That goes with the territory of sports coverage and is considered a perk.

I think the subject has been covered as well as it is going to be.

Anonymous said...

I think Kevin MacDowell should start wearing a bow-tie while delivering the news. (edit)

Anonymous said...

I heard Kevin was going to dress up as Santa Claus at the Amanda Post Christmas concert!

HO! HO! OH NO!

Jack Tirak said...

Enough with the sarcasm. It is going over the top. I had to reject a few posts because it has nothing to do with the subject of EMGR. If you want to comment about an on-air person and how they perform (in your opinion) that is one thing. But let’s not take it to the absurd.

I hate editing comments but I won't let the blog be hijacked.

My comment involves the x-mas music format at Froggy... I'm no scrooge but YUCK! There's no way Christmas music can be appealing after over a month of listening to it. (Anyone who has ever worked retail will agree) And I'm a little disturbed that someone actually took the time to count Johnny Mathis songs over the weekend on Froggy.

On another note, during Studio 60 last night, at the very end of the show and during a poignant moment, Amanda Post cuts in live with a preview of the 11:00 news and then it cuts back to Studio 60 again and one of the main characters is on the floor. Frakkity FRAK! grrrrr...

The one thing EMGR readers know how to do is keep stations honest. Nothing...but nothing gets past you guys and gals.

Most think that only guys read this blog but I know a lot of women in the industry and out who also read. I like their observations and they are also brutelly honest.

Erie DJ Guy is correct about Theresa Murtland. She is indeed doing missionary work in Africa.

And how come no one's mentioned Jim Dewart from WSEE? I always thought the guy that played Larry Bud Melman on the old David Letterman shows was modeled after Jim.

Just thought of Frank Rizzone. Is he still at Mercyhurst College?

Former JET-TV reporters Laura Gray, Rob Macko and Julie Fine are all working in the Buffalo market now.

The big question is...where is JOEY working? Last week of the November sweeps and Mr. Carribbean has been M-I-A. Did they ditch him??

Alan B DuMont said...

WSEE did not ditch Joey Stevens. It is the understanding of the EMGR editorial staff that Joey is merely enjoying a well deserved week off.

Not all TV stations have the same standards when it comes to sweeps month.

The EMGR staff would like to take this opportunity to extend our best wishes to our good friends at WICU, WJET, WSEE, WQLN and WFXP well. Without your continued support this blog would not be the fastest growing Media Blog in Erie. Thanks!
