This is off topic but since it is Thanksgiving it is appropriate.

I have noticed that Froggy 94.7 has started playing and will be playing non-stop Christmas Music straight through Christmas Day!

Why? It's bad enough the rampant overcommercialization of the holiday!

Why? It's bad enough when everyone screams spend! spend! spend! to celebrate a religious holiday.

Why? Why? Why!!!!!!!!!!????????

I long for the old days when the Mall and merchants weren't decorated for Christmas until Thanksgiving. I long for the days when you didn't have to prove your love to your neighbors and the worls by buying the biggest and best "gotta-have-it-now!" TOY!

Nonstop Christmas Music 24/7 WHAT A STUPID IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like it or not. Those days are way over. Actually, XMAS music on a constant basis has been done in many markets and has proved successful in past years

Retailers like it because it keep shoppers in the mood. Stations like it because retailers buy more airtime.

I hate it! If he didn't quit I would have thought this was Rick Rambaldo's dumb idea!

Congradutions Eriedjguy for picking up that prediction. After the last few years, I was also waiting too for that to happen.

You could be right about a format change but in Froggy's case it might be a format tweak. They may broaden the playlist a bit from the same 300. I would welcome that.

Also, the fall book is over and it is time to prepare for the spring sweep in radio. I would look for other changes to take place at the end of the year or the first of next. WJET radio might be more than just a Jeff Johns "one man band."

Other than that, I think most stations are generally happy where they fall. It will be interesting to see how the WOLF does in their first book. I predict it will do better but signal problems will prevent it from reaching its true capacity.

That fits to what I have been thinking as well. I hope they also reach maybe a bit older into the late 50's. That R&R is not heard on Erie radio either. Not all but the top #1's would be cool. WKBW in Buffalohas created a whole new format with personalities of that erea and music.

I like the Christmas music on Froggy. I don't care why they do it...I'm just glad they do. And I'm exactly the demographic Froggy is targeting. Bah humbug to all you scrooges who think it's too early or too much. You can't help but feel good listening to sounds of the holiday...and it's nice to know where we can hear them non-stop.

Rudolph...

I am with you. Radio is about choice. I hope they do it every year. Maybe it will keep Captain Dad in a good mood longer.

Incidentally...How did you get such a cute nose?

Hey Rudy!

I'm a Scrooge because I don't like the fact that a RELIGIOUS holiday has been overcommercialized!

Christmas is about the Baby Jesus! (Not getting the latest HDTV for 10% off wholesale!)

BAH HUMBUG!

Actually, what I should have said was that Christmas doesn't begin for me until the first drunk is thrown out of the annual WSEE Christmas Party!!! (This year to be held at Scorchers!)

BAH HUMBUG!

Especially not SJL/Lilly/WSEE/WICU!

Anonymous said...

Speaking of WICU, what's with the minor tweaking of the news set?

They painted the front all blue! The plain formica desktop is now all black and their is silver trim around the front! UGH! LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING FROM THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE!

Memo to SJL/Lilly, Hire a PROFESSIONAL set design team to makeover your hideous WICU news set! PLEASE!!!!????????

In Pittsburgh, there are 3 stations playing All Christmas, All the Time. Forget Jack FM, It's the All New Santa FM. "We Play What Retailers Want." Froggy is the first Erie station to go X Mas a month ahead of time. Before, the closest holiday stations were WREO Star 97.1 in Ashtabula (which hasn't flipped this year.) Also Cool 101.7 in Meadville which has pulled out the holiday tunes once again. Oh by gosh, by golly.

Is Froggy 94.7 changing its format after the 24/7 all-Christmas all-the-time extravaganza?

I heard a rumor (imagine that) that the Frog was hopping to "BOB FM"....any takers? anyone? any truth to it?

(Sounds like something Lord Richard would have done - before he jumped ship!)

Jack Tirak said...

Both the "Jack" and "Bob" formats fit to what we had been talking about in broadening the music mix.

The "Jack format" tends to be more local while "Bob" is more sydicated announce inserts.

Either wouldn't be much of a stretch for the current Froggie. A hope it doesn't mean a call letter change as I think this set has signifiant recognition and a great deal of capital invested.

If Rambaldo were still running the show he would probably go with "BOB FM." You know, the syndie announce inserts - a GREAT way to save money! - Lots and Lots of MONEY!

And as this Blog is making us aware, the bottom line in Erie Broadcasting - either TV or Radio, is CASH! Cold, Hard Cash!

"Hi! I'm Captain Dan and you're listening to the all-new "BOB FM?" "JACK FM?" "RICK FM!!!???"

(Couldn't resist "Rick FM")

"RICK FM: ALL MONEY, ALL THE TIME!"

SJL would have to make their cameras look good before we could ever have an accurate idea what their set actually looks like. Their cameras have to be the worst looking I have ever seen - washed out and that brownish tinge to them - you'd think for what they spent on them they would at least make them look good (or at least try to).

How about a "Jim" format? Heavy on the Grand Funk/CCR...but with liberal doses of Sly/Family Stone, Ohio Players and Tower of Power...and a dash of Dave Clark 5 just to keep it interesting. Oh, I almost forgot...some Mott the Hoople, Wishbone Ash and the Raspberries.
